✨Forms of address (title)
In English there are many forms of address or titles such as:
• Sir (for a knight)
• Dr (for a medical doctor or a holder of a PhD doctorate)
• Dr (for a medical doctor or a holder of a PhD doctorate)
but the common forms of address are Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms.
• Mr for men
• Mrs, Miss and Ms for women.
• Mrs, Miss and Ms for women.
π’The first rule to know is that these titles should NEVER be used with the person's first name in the English speaking culture.
π±π»♂️If my name is John Smith then you would call me:
• John✅
• Mr. Smith✅
• or Mr. John Smith✅
depending on the circumstances, but never Mr. John.❌
⚠️When I visit India and other Eastern contries they call me Mr Paul, or, in Japan, they call me Paul san, this is them being polite in their culture. I don't have a problem with this, it's just not our way.
πOne exception to this rule is for Royalty and knights, or their wives, Sir John Smith and Lady Janet Smith, would be called Sir John and Lady Janet.
π©π»For women the title depends on her marital status.
• Mrs is for a married woman.
• Miss is for a woman who is definitely single.
• Ms is used when there is uncertainty about her marital status.
• Miss is for a woman who is definitely single.
• Ms is used when there is uncertainty about her marital status.
π»If my name was Janet Brown you would never call me Mrs Janet, or Miss Janet.❌
I would be Mrs, or Miss Brown, or even Mrs Janet Brown.✅
π©These titles tend to only be used in formal situations.
π©Business customers are addressed using their title.
π©People in a more senior position to you may have to be referred to by their title.
π©Students, particularly young students, may have to do the same with their teachers. In schools in the English speaking world teachers are called sir and miss. Even if a woman teacher is married she is still called miss.
✨Examples:
πΉ'Is my answer correct sir?'
πΉ'May I go to the toilet miss?'.
πΉ'Is my answer correct sir?'
πΉ'May I go to the toilet miss?'.
π©Outside schools the term 'sir' is only used in formal circumstances such as in business, it is used in lieu of their name.
πΊπΈThe Americans tend to use 'sir' more often than other English speaking countries.
✨For most of the time, in non-formal situations, we will only use the person's first name when addressing them.
